Integrated Pain Management Advocacy and Education

Challenge

When a person’s life is completely undone never-ending pain can become the focus. 1 in 5 adults and 1 in 4 children suffer with daily pain following an accident, being diagnosed with a chronic illness or failing to recover from a medical procedure. These are valuable, creative members of our family and our communities. The healthcare system is not set up to care for them and families are forced to provide more and more of the required services at home. Many go broke under the weight of medical debt.

Solution

The federal department of Health and Human Services (HHS) wrote an extensive report in 2019 that laid out a vision for the care of the person living with severe pain. They recommend an approach that combines multiple services ranging from medical interventions to the complementary healing approaches of traditional native cultures including lifestyle medicine. There was also mention of changing state insurance regulations to include coverage for these services when treating people living with daily pain.

Anodunos is working both at the State and Federal level with the US Pain Foundation to require coverage for more options for people living with pain to restore a better quality of life.

At Anodunos our vision is directly taken from the HHS report recommendations. Because pain can rob energy and focus, we have added an Anodunos certified pain navigator to organize and coordinate the collaborative care.

We are also suggesting no more than three modalities at a time so as to keep schedules reasonable and include time to integrate the care. The Anodunos certified medical and complementary providers are trained to keep the person they are delivering care to at the center of their collaboration.

The Anodunos Method

Our goal is to train providers and pain navigators in our Anodunos Method approach. We see a future where everyone has access to a drug-free or drug adjacent complement. When working to avoid invasive procedures, or if medications are no longer working or the availability of painkillers have been restricted for physical, mental and emotional pain. Everything we do is designed to train a team of providers using the latest science to relax the nervous system, which has been shown to lower pain and increase energy. Using this approach allows people to get their lives back.

Approaches to chronic pain, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, challenges with food and fitness are not one size fits all, as we see in most programs. The Anodunos Method takes into account the full landscape of options and makes sure our trainings are steeped in the best recommendations for the goals and circumstances of the person living with chronic pain.

Focusing on evidence-based ancient healing arts coupled with modern brain science, we train all medical providers, physical therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, massage therapists, meditation leaders, life coaches, fitness trainers, health coaches and yoga instructors to work in teams to provide superior care for the complex pain patient.

The programs we are advocating for will connect clients to trained AMN (Anodunos Method Navigators) and AMP (Anodunos Method Providers) who offer support, understanding and a carefully prepared, personalized approach to each client’s recovery. After taking into account environmental, mind, body, spirit and heart elements, each client is given their individualized plan.

The Anodunos Method difference:

  • We are not advocating for a program in a box. Our vision is to give each person access to their unique combination of therapies.
  • The plan is for the trained pain navigator and certified practitioners to address all areas of life with a holistic approach including work environment, food choices, stress, sleep, relationships, fitness, history of pain, as well as hopes and dreams for the future.
  • All AMN are trained to surround their clients with caring and concern for their well-being which includes regular and thorough communication among each client’s care team. They are trained to work collaboratively so each session builds toward the client’s recovery.
  • Big picture, Anodunos is forging a path to change the state of healthcare from crisis management to holistic care, empowering people to access control of their health at the foundation of healing.

Testimonials

“As a personal trainer, athlete, and actor I have always been aware that everything in one’s body is connected, however, Christine and the Anodunos program have opened my eyes to that on a deeper level. It has shown me that symptoms are not just related to the specific site at which they are occurring, rather they are connected to your entire body and your entire being. Pain (both emotional and physical) had been locked in my body in different places, which then manifested physically – the treatments we did helped unblock various parts of my body to allow all of the energy to flow, which then led to a higher level of balance.”
M.H.

“Christine has an amazing ability to listen and discover the source of your ailment: from physical complaints to deeper emotional issues or life challenges. She is passionate about health and healing and this allows her to help on many different levels and connect the physical and spiritual parts of her patients for maximal healing and growth.”
F.E.

“My Anodunos facilitator listened attentively and formulated a treatment plan taking into consideration both the physical and emotional aspects of the current issue. She developed a working alliance with me and the other practitioners on my team so that trust was established and I am free to ask questions and get answers. I was involved in the decisions of what to treat and recommendations were fully explained.”
J.G.

“I didn’t think I was worth it to have a healthy fit body. I didn’t have compassion for myself in this area. Now I know I’m worth it. Thank you!”
L.R.

“I feel really good. I kept hearing Jenn’s voice in my head all weekend, it was so motivating! She coordinated all my sessions with my teams so I didn’t have to worry about anything!”
L.W.

“It’s worth it; you just have to make the commitment. I’ve made some major changes in my life here.”
D.S.

“I am now in control of myself. I’m moving into my 40s living my best life and in my best health. It sounds obvious but it’s a big thing to grasp that health is in your control. Before Anodunos health and happiness seemed like they existed in a bubble that was out of reach. The good news is that it’s not huge horrible shifts to make changes that gave me access to that bubble.”

Who We Are:

Monica Demitor PhD:
I have worked in healthcare most of my career, however in my personal life I have additionally utilized complementary health services.  I have found that using these holistic services on a regular basis has reduced my need to access the main health system, which is primarily crisis management driven.  It was during my time working as CEO at RiverMend Health that I became aware of how our existing medical approaches to pain management were resulting in a significant number of individuals becoming addicted to opioids.   Over the next few years, the opioid crisis has accelerated.
In this context we created Anodunos, an organization that’s mission is to create a world without pain, utilizing complementary approaches to each individual’s challenges.

My experience includes organizational leadership, a Master of Business, Bachelor of Science Nursing. I served in Senior Executive Management roles as follows: SVP DaVita Healthcare Partners, COO American Access Care, CEO RiverMend Health, COO Schweiger Dermatology Group, and CEO MMD Consulting Inc.

Christine Sotmary MS, L.Ac., CPC:
With a degree in Education from the CUNY/BA program, I have written curricula and taught integrative healthcare and family caregiving advocacy. More recently I created the Anodunos Method Pain Navigator and Provider professional trainings.

I also have a Master of Science as a NYS Licensed Acupuncturist, am a Certified Professional Life Coach, Certified NutraMetrix Functional Nutrition/Business Consultant, and Certified Transition Lifestyle System Coach in private practice.

For 20 years I was the massage therapist/acupuncturist and trainer for top athletes in the New York City area. During the last couple of years I have been trained and lead Peer Support Groups for the US Pain Foundation, as well as being USPF certified in Chronic Pain Advocacy.

Professional Memberships: NYS Pain Society, Eastern Pain Association, Psychophysioloic Disorders Association

Advisory Committees: Alternative Pain Treatment Directory, Institute for the Study of Integrative Health

Jennifer Trepeck BBA:
For years I worked full time at a hedge fund and built my wellness business on the side. Sitting at my desk, I realized we were all beyond stressed and having on-site trainers and a gym didn’t really matter. We were too busy and when someone said “do this for your wellness,” it was met with an eye roll. And at the same time, my lower back hurt from sitting. Once I was home my fingers would go numb laying in bed on my phone. At first I thought it was just me. Through my health coaching practice, I realized it wasn’t. SO many of us are in this boat and with my experience I’m uniquely qualified to do something to help others.

I attended the University MI Ross School of Business with a major in Marketing and Organizational Behavior, became an Optimal Health Coach in private practice as a Weight Loss/Health Coach, NutraMetrix Business Consultant, and Certified Transition Lifestyle System Coach.
